Representatives of the European social economy met in Brussels last Wednesday to celebrate the anniversary of the approval of the European Action Plan on Social Economy by the European Commission, which took place on December 9 last year. The event, which was organized by the entity that represents this business model in Europe, Social Economy Europe (SEE), and the Social Economy Intergroup of the European Parliament, was attended by different personalities who explained why this plan is an opportunity to promote this business model, create quality jobs and achieve sustainable development in Europe. That same day was celebrated the 10 years of the employers of the European Social Economy, an entity that took the opportunity to meet its General Assembly, which approved the entry of three new members.

The president of the Spanish Business Confederation of the Social Economy (CEPES), Juan Antonio Pedreño, has been unanimously re-elected for the third time, as president of Social Economy Europe (SEE), the highest representative entity of this business model in Europe. Pedreño will continue in office for 3 years and his re-election has taken place within the framework of the General Assembly, which SEE held blended in Brussels, with the presence of all its member partners. He begins this mandate at a time of consolidation of the European Social Economy as the company of the future and with the great challenge of placing Social Economy Europe at the heart of the European agenda.

Yesterday the European Conference 'The role of the Social Economy in job creation and the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights' was held in Sintra, Portugal, coinciding with the European capital of the Social Economy 2021 in Portugal. It was attended by Authorities from different European countries, representatives of the European Social Economy and Community Institutions. The resilience and rapid recovery capacity of the Social Economy business model in the hardest moments of the pandemic was one of the central axes of the day.

On December 4, the High Level meeting on the Social and Solidarity Economy in the EU 'The Social Economy for an inclusive, sustainable and fair recovery' was held. An act that ended the Spanish presidency of the Monitoring Committee of the Luxembourg Declaration, which during the following year will be held by Portugal and which in 2021 will be held by the Government of Italy. At the event, the TOLEDO Declaration was approved and signed by 18 governments of the European Union, an unprecedented event that confirms the strength of the European Social Economy for recovery.

CEPES, as employer of the Social Economy, will be a strategic ally of the Government of Spain so that the capital of Toledo is an international benchmark in Social Economy. The appointment of Toledo as the European Capital of the Social Economy was agreed on May 28 at the meeting of the Monitoring Committee of the Luxembourg Declaration, made up of 16 EU governments committed to the Social Economy. Toledo aims to reinforce the work already carried out by the previous European capitals of the Social Economy, Madrid 2017, Maribor 2018 (Slovenia) and Strasbourg 2019 (France) with the challenge of making visible and promoting the European Social Economy.

Given the forecast of a drop of more than 7% of the GDP of the largest European economies announced by the IMF, Juan Antonio Pedreño, president of the Spanish Business Confederation of the Social Economy and of 'Social Economy Europe', asks the EU for strategic investments unprecedented and measures that include the Social Economy and all business actors to overcome this crisis. To this end, an open Open Letter has been sent to the Presidencies of the Commission, the Council and the European Parliament.

The European Social Economy and the EU institutions will analyze "the role of the Social Economy in the future of employment" at the international conference in Gothenburg (Sweden) on 16 November and its conclusions will be moved to the Summit of Heads of State of the EU to be held in the Swedish city the following day with the aim of approving the European Pillar of Social Rights.
