Representatives of the European social economy met in Brussels last Wednesday to celebrate the anniversary of the approval of the European Action Plan on Social Economy by the European Commission, which took place on December 9 last year. The event, which was organized by the entity that represents this business model in Europe, Social Economy Europe (SEE), and the Social Economy Intergroup of the European Parliament, was attended by different personalities who explained why this plan is an opportunity to promote this business model, create quality jobs and achieve sustainable development in Europe. That same day was celebrated the 10 years of the employers of the European Social Economy, an entity that took the opportunity to meet its General Assembly, which approved the entry of three new members.

CEPES welcomes the approval of the report promoted by the Social Economy Intergroup, headed by the MEP and spokesman for Employment and Social Affairs, Jordi Cañas, to implement the European Social Economy Action Plan. The report was adopted last week in Strasbourg by a large majority of the plenary, with 493 votes in favour, 75 against and 69 abstentions, which means absolute support for the promotion of the social economy in Europe through the European Action Plan for the Social Economy. The policy of this Plan includes more than 50 measures to be implemented over the next nine years in key areas such as state aid, legal and policy frameworks, socially responsible public procurement, business support and youth entrepreneurship, access to finance, contribution of the social economy to the green and digital transitions, social innovation and recognition, among others

The first objective of the European Social Economy Action Plan is to promote a common and inclusive legal definition adapted to the diversity of territories". This was stated by the President of CEPES and Social Economy Europe, Juan Antonio Pedreño during the meeting of the Social Economy Intergroup of the European Parliament held this Friday, called 'Towards a recommendation of the Council on Social Economy: promoting the convergence of European social economy frameworks'. In addition, he recalled that from Social Economy Euroe, work is being done to ensure that the social economy represents at least 10% of European employment in 2030 (compared to 6.7% in 2017), which would represent around 22 million jobs

The European Committee of the Regions has approved by majority the adoption of an opinion on the Action Plan for the Social Economy, a plan that is expected to be approved by the European Commission in the last quarter of 2021. Through this opinion, the CoR provides a series of policy recommendations focused on three points - training, dissemination and financing - for the work of this plan, which aims to promote the contribution of the Social Economy to local and regional development in Europe. In this opinion, the CoR praises the Commission's commitment to present such a plan, in line with the requests of the European Economic and Social Committee, the Intergroup on Social Economy of the European Parliament, GECES, different EU governments and committed European networks with the development of the Social Economy as Social Economy Europe.

The Intergroup on Social Economy of the European Parliament, in a telematic meeting held yesterday before more than 400 personalities from the community institutions, from the Member States and from the entities of the Social Economy, places the European Action Plan for the Social Economy as a pillar of social and economic reconstruction after the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Social Economy Intergroup of the European Parliament has been formally constituted in Brussels supported by the five most important political formations of the European Chamber and more than 100 MEPs.
