• According to the report 'The Social Economy in postgraduate university training. 2020-2021 academic year ', carried out by CEPES, in the 2020-2021 academic year, Spanish universities offered 140 postgraduate training actions and three doctorates related to Social Economy, compared to the 29 existing in the 2015-2016 academic year (483% more ).
• 65% of the Spanish universities associated with the CRUE (50 out of 76) take a course on entrepreneurship, creation and management of Social Economy companies, in general or on any of their business formulas.
• This promotion is a sign of the interest of society, students and teachers for this sustainable, competitive, egalitarian, responsible, supportive, democratic business model, where people and stable and quality employment prevail. More than 20 million Spaniards are associated with a Social Economy company.

Madrid, November 18, 2020. Postgraduate training in Social Eonomy at Spanish universities has grown by 483% in the last five academic years, going from 29 postgraduate training actions in the 2015-2016 academic year to the 140 currently existing (in addition to three doctorates).
This is shown by the report 'The Social Economy in postgraduate university training. 2020-2021 academic year ' , which shows that currently 65% of Spanish universities have postgraduate studies on entrepreneurship, creation and management of Social Economy companies (specifically 50 of the 76 universities associated with the Conference of Rectors of Universities Spanish (CRUE) and the recently created International School EDIS).
The report, produced annually by CEPES, shows the different existing training modalities in Social Economy. While some universities develop courses directly linked to this business model, others contemplate the Social Economy within their programming and study plans, or focusing on one of its different legal modalities.
The president of CEPES, Juan Antonio Pedreño , valued “the significant increase in the number of postgraduate courses on Social Economy registered in recent years, proof of the interest of the Society in this business model and also of students and teachers, and of its growing weight in the current situation, since the reconstruction demands Social Economy companies, which generate stable and quality employment, equal and inclusive, competitive and responsible, democratic and supportive, which do not relocate and show that it is possible to combine economic profitability and quality".
Pedreño specified that “the academic sector must continue to promote specific training in Social Economy, both in postgraduate courses and in undergraduate studies themselves, due to the need for existing knowledge on the part of students and companies, as well as the still limited existing offer in the academic world ”.
CC.AA. with more training actions in Social Economy
Of the 140 postgraduate training actions and 3 doctorates related to Social Economy in the 2020-2021 academic year, 23 are taking place in Madrid and Catalonia. They are followed by the Basque Country and Castilla y León, with 18 each. They are followed by Andalusia, with 16; Valencian Community, with 15; Castilla-La Mancha, with 3; Extremadura, with 2; and Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, La Rioja, Aragón and the Canary Islands, with 1.
have been carried out in Catalonia, being the autonomous community, which registers the most studies of this type. It is followed by the Basque Country, with 20; Andalusia, with 19; Castilla León, with 18; and the Community of Madrid, with 15 training actions. In addition, there are 11 at the state level.
Regarding the temporal evolution of the training offer of the social economy, an interannual increase of 6.4% has been observed in the number of training actions offered by the Universities; This fact highlights the importance of investigating and analyzing the presence of the social economy in the academic field (objective of this report) in order to expand, promote and disseminate the existing training offer and extend it to all stages of education higher.
Promote knowledge and professionalization
The main objective of this report is to make visible the postgraduate training offer that exists in each academic year aimed at promoting knowledge and professionalization about the business models of the Social Economy, given that the training that universities offer their students in the degrees related to business studies does not sufficiently address specialized knowledge in Social Economy, so that students are forced to take postgraduate training that complements these deficiencies.
In this exercise, the report, which CEPES has produced since 2012, is part of the catalog of actions that CEPES develops within the Spanish strategic framework of Social Economy 2017-2020, approved by the Government of Spain and whose ultimate objective is the implementation of instruments that promote Social Economy entities, such as by increasing the visibility of social economy entities and disseminating their activity.
